Stearic acid – one of the commonest fatty acids found in cosmetics

Stearic acid is found in many cosmetics products. It is a component of creams, balms, lotions, conditioners, shampoos and sunscreen products. It is mainly used to combine substances that normally do not mix with each other, making it an emulsifier, i.e. it allows oil and water to mix. It can also help to determine the consistency of a product. Emulsions containing stearic acid usually feel soft and smooth on the skin.

An important fat for the human body

Stearic acid is one of the most important fats required by the human body. It can be absorbed from our diet but is also produced by our own bodies. Its activities and effects include the development of cell membranes, support for the body’s natural protective mechanism, and the creation of energy reserves. It also plays a decisive role in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Last but not least, it helps to give the skin, hair and nails a healthy appearance.

What are the sources of stearic acid?

Stearic acid can be found in just about every fat-containing food. It is a component of nearly all animal and vegetable oils and fats. High proportions of stearic acid are found for example in shea butter, coconut oil, cocoa butter and hazelnuts.

The statements about properties, effects and effectiveness made here refer exclusively to the plant and its components/products.
