Alpha-linolenic acid – one of the most effective skincare ingredients

Alpha-linolenic acid is an essential fatty acid which the body needs, but is not able to produce itself. This omega-3 fatty acid ranks as one of the most important essential fatty acids along with linoleic acid (omega-6 fatty acid). These are mainly obtained from our diet. Good sources include linseed oil, which is derived from flax seeds, and oily fish (e.g. herring or salmon). Apart from linseed oil, alpha-linolenic acid can also be found in chia oil, hemp oil, rapeseed oil, walnut oil, sea buckthorn oil and unrefined soybean oil.

Information about alpha-linolenic acid

  • INCI name (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients name): Linolenic Acid
  • Natural (e.g. linseed oil)
  • ses: Lip care, creams, nail care
  • Special properties of alpha-linolenic acid: Cell-regenerating, smoothens hair and lips

Functions of omega-3 fatty acids for the body

Omega-3 fatty acids like alpha-linolenic acid are very important for our bodies. They are involved in a long list of different processes. For example, these high-quality fats play a role in cell membrane development. Their contribution to skincare is that they help to create a healthy and even complexion through the process of new cell formation and by activating the skin’s metabolism. This is why alpha-linolenic acid is a favoured ingredient in anti-ageing formulas.

The presence of alpha-linolenic acid in cosmetics products helps to create oils and substances with a lighter consistency. They are also usually absorbed into the skin quite quickly, so the care product leaves a pleasant feeling for users. Depending on the amount contained in the product, they can have a highly activating and stimulating effect on the processes that take place in the skin. That is why alpha-linolenic acid is regarded as one of the most effective substances in skincare.

The statements about properties, effects and effectiveness made here refer exclusively to alpha-linolenic acid and its components/products.
