Hydrogenated vegetable oil and oleic acid – a multitude of skincare uses

High-quality vegetable oils are particularly valued in cosmetics products. The constituents of various vegetable oils have a range of properties that support skincare and often have a lipid-replenishing effect. Vegetable oil-containing products can also improve the skin’s natural retention of moisture. The oils and fats are often very similar to or even the same as the skin’s own lipids, so they are very well tolerated by most types of skin. This means that they are also able to transport valuable active ingredients and nutrients to the body across the skin barrier.

About oleic acid

  • INCI name (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients name): Oleic Acid
  • Natural
  • Uses: Lip care, creams, lotions, hair treatments, massage oils
  • Special properties of oleic acid: Skin-regenerating and antioxidant effect, smoothens and softens skin and hair

What are vegetable oils made of?

Vegetable oils are essentially composed of the following fatty acids: lauric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid, stearic acid, linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid and gamma-linolenic acid. They all differ in terms of their structure and their properties. Since each individual vegetable oil has a specific composition and varying proportions of the above-mentioned fatty acids, it follows that they will also have different properties and effects.

Beneficial properties of oleic acid for the skin

Oleic acid is a mono-unsaturated, long-chain fatty acid. Vegetable oils that are rich in oleic acid include olive oil, peanut oil, rapeseed oil, coconut oil, almond oil and argan oil. Vegetable oils and products with a high proportion of oleic acid are very easily absorbed by the skin. This is beneficial both for the skin’s ability to retain moisture and for the delivery of nutrients to the skin. In addition, oleic acid makes creams and balms spread more easily and leaves the skin feeling pleasantly soft.
