Titanium-dioxide
Titanium dioxide – UV protection in cosmetics
Titanium dioxide is a metal oxide with a very high capacity to absorb UV radiation. In cosmetics, only extremely small quantities are therefore needed to achieve the desired UV filter effect. Titanium dioxide has also been used for several decades to reduce the transparency of cosmetics formulas. In addition, it is used as a pigment in a wide range of everyday products to give a white colour.

Importance of titanium dioxide in cosmetics
Titanium dioxide offers a number of options and effects for cosmetics product formulas. It is used in make-up, for instance, to add more brightness and colour intensity to on-trend shades. Its good covering power can also reduce unwanted shine. This makes it a useful ingredient in various mattifying and high-coverage products.
The most important function of titanium dioxide in cosmetics, however, is its effectiveness as a UV filter. Titanium dioxide is able to absorb both UVA and UVB radiation and thus helps to protect the skin. It is found in all kinds of sunscreen products. Since it has a very high UV absorbing power, only very small amounts need to be added to products. The use of titanium dioxide in sunscreens can help to prevent sunlight-induced premature ageing of the skin. It is often combined with zinc oxide for even greater effectiveness.
