Bisabolol
Bisabolol – a gentle and calming ingredient derived from chamomile
Bisabolol (also called alpha-bisabolol) is the main constituent of chamomile oil. The calming and deodorising properties of chamomile have been known for thousands of years. It is commonly regarded as a medicinal plant and is a favoured ingredient in both pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. Bisabolol is less allergenic than chamomile extract, which makes it highly suitable for those with sensitive skin.

The prize bloom among medicinal plants
Chamomile is a rather nondescript plant with hidden powers. It is easy to cultivate and can be found growing in places like roadsides and cornfields in Europe, Africa and America. Its beneficial effects were first discovered by herbalists and physicians in the ancient world. Today, the essential oils of chamomile are commonly used in medicines, herbal teas and all kinds of care products for the skin, lips, teeth and hair.
How is bisabolol obtained?
chamomile flower has an essential oil content of around 0.3 to 1.5 percent. The oils are obtained by drying the flowers and then heating them over a water bath. The essential oils are vaporised along with the steam. When the steam cools, the essential oils are released. This process is known as steam distillation. Bisabolol is isolated from the chamomile oil extract.
In cosmetics products, bisabolol is mainly used for its skin-calming and deodorising properties. The healing processes of chamomile/bisabolol can help to nurture tired skin and chapped lips.

Bisabolol boosts the effect of other active ingredients
Alongside its calming ability, bisabolol provides another benefit in cosmetics formulations. Since it mixes easily with the oil secretions of the skin, it helps to increase the penetration of other conditioning beauty ingredients.
Bisabolol is also said to reduce the breakdown of collagen. Collagen is an important structural protein that promotes firm and supple skin. Bisabolol can therefore help to protect the appearance of the skin and prevent premature ageing.
